Soni Side Turn Up

I like to say that I don’t care what happens on my birthday and in most cases, I really don’t. I enjoy getting dinner with a big group of friends and then maybe a girls night out on the town. That’s about it. This year, as the time drew nearer, I felt like I wanted to do something special, something different. I kew that I wanted to invite the nearest and dearest to all celebrate with me at the same time… I also knew that I love brunch, I’ve always loved brunch. Brunch is life.

I decided to reach out to the good people at J’s Fresh Bar and Kitchen to ask for their assistance in throwing my birthday bash. I’m not sure if you remember, but J’s was one of the first reviews I did back in the day when they were only a few months old. I fell in love the place: the atmosphere, people, food, cocktails, music.. I had found one of my new favourite joints.

My love for J’s has gotten to the point where I feel like I’ve become their unofficial brand ambassador. I am always encouraging my friends who’ve never been to go and trying to drag my friends from Westlands to Karen on a beautiful day to enjoy everything J’s has to offer.

Anywayyy, I spoke to J’s and they helped me plan a great deal for me and my friends to enjoy a boozy brunch. Coincidentally, J’s has now launched their Brunch Club, and my birthday fell on the day that it kicked off! All I had to do was invite my friends and find the perfect birthday cake.

Here’s the basic premise of how it worked: each person invited would pay a set price for an item off the brunch menu shared 18 bottles of wine and several cocktails. The party started on Saturday December 5th at 11PM and technically ended at 3PM.

At around 11:30AM, people started to show up. We had a long table set up family-style for everyone to sit around.

We danced, we drank, we ate, and we had a fantastic time.

One of my favourite local DJs and good friend, DJ Foozak was on the decks all day playing some chilled music and definitely getting the party going.

The food at J’s is fantastic. I love how they do so much more than eggs and toast for breakfast options. They push the envelope and offer some great twists on classics like eggs benedict and pancakes.

After we ate and mingled, it was time to cut the cake. I got my cake from my good friend Courtney at Sweet Arts. She asked for my flavour preferences to which I told her I wanted chocolate, coffee and Oreo. THIS was the result.

It tasted as glorious as it looked. Chocolate sponge with coffee and Oreo buttercream.I’m pretty sure this is one of the best birthday cakes I have had in my life. There were people who don’t even like cake at my party who were asking for seconds. I’d order this cake again just to enjoy alone at home. 😉

J’s is the kind of place where you can spend the entire day which is exactly what we did. Instead of leaving at 3PM, we left closer to 7PM. The service was incredible and everyone was so welcoming and accommodating for us to stay. You can check out the #SoniSideTurnUp hashtags on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to see the collaborative digital photo album from people who attended the event.

Last but absolutely not least I need to say some really big “thank you”s. Thank you to DJ Foozak for DJing at my party, it was so good to have you there as a friend but also taking the time to play some sweet tunes. Thank you to G.A. Njogu Photography and Tatiana Karanja for photographing and capturing the day. Thank you to Courtney from Sweet Art for the cake of my dreams!

A BIG thank you goes out to the fantastic team at J’s. From the planning stages, they were so open and willing to help me accomplish my dream birthday brunch. They put up with over 30 of us drinking and dancing around them as they were working on Saturday. I have to thank the Chef at J’s who provided delicious, fresh, unique meals to all of us. I especially have to thank Johnnie and Moureen, the owner and marketing manager of J’s. You both worked tirelessly and this entire thing would not have been possible without you. Thank you.

My last thank you goes out to all the people who showed up for my birthday. That day was probably one of the best days of 2015 for me all thanks to you. Thank you to the people who came and stayed but also to all of you who stopped in for a drink or just to say hi. It means so much to me that you all came, the turn out was amazing. 🙂

Want to get in on the J’s magic? This weekend J’s turns one year old and they’re having a party to celebrate! Friday and Saturday will see some great local and international talents grace the J’s decks and it’s sure to be a great party. Check out the event here and hopefully I’ll see you there 🙂
